FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do I need a gas shutoff valve?2023-08-22T12:03:51-07:00

With fire being the second leading cause of damage resulting from earthquakes, it is important to take measures to protect what’s important. Firefighter Gas safety Products greatly reduce the chance of fires by shutting off the flow of gas to a property in the event of an earthquake of 5.4 magnitude or greater. Watch our video to see why it matters.

Can vertical valves be installed upside down?2023-02-16T14:48:12-08:00

No. Our vertical valves use a simple but reliable system involving a small steel ball fit to the size of the valve opening. (See our “How It Works” section) Due to this configuration, gas must flow through the top and out the bottom for proper functioning.

Where can I find the valve’s serial number?2023-03-01T13:17:35-08:00

Each valve has a unique serial number located on either the top cover or side of valve labeled “Serial #”

Do I need to use a stabilizer bracket with my valve?2023-02-16T14:48:29-08:00

The short answer is yes. In order to prevent nuisance tripping, a seismic stabilizer bracket must be installed between the valve and the meter. This will ensure max effectiveness of your shutoff valve.

Where can I purchase a valve?2023-03-01T13:39:39-08:00

Check our “Find a Location” section to see local authorized agents in your area.

Why does my valve keep tripping?2023-02-16T14:48:42-08:00

Our valves are built to sense motion. Oftentimes gardeners, gates, children, etc. push or bump into the valve which accidentally causes them to go off.  Make sure that a stabilizer bracket is installed to keep the valve in place and prevent such trips from occuring. Cars or people passing by without touching the valves should not cause them to go off.

If this is not the case, make sure that the valve is level within 2 degrees of the pipe. Unlevel installation can cause the valve to work improperly.

How do I reset my valve?2023-03-01T13:03:02-08:00

AGV (Horizontal) series: To ensure proper gas flow, locate the shaft on the front or back of the valve next to the instructions: “Reset 1/8 Turn Only.” While holding your other finger on the shaft’s other side to ensure that it is not pushed through, gently turn the shaft by 1/8″ with a small screwdriver. You should see a green color in the circular “sight glass” meaning your valve has been reset!

VAGV (Vertical) series: To ensure proper gas flow, locate the green shaft on the front of the valve labeled “Reset”. Gently turn the shaft clockwise with a small screwdriver or coin. You should hear the sound of a metal ball moving around and see a silver color in the circular “sight glass”, meaning your valve has been reset! Alternatively, if you would like to shut-off your valve, turn the red “Shut-Off” shaft counter-clockwise to shut off the flow of gas.

NAGV (90 degree) series: To ensure proper gas flow, locate the green shaft on the top of the valve labeled “Reset”.

FAGV (Flanged) and Industrial AGV 300 & 400 (Industrial Horizontal) series: To ensure proper gas flow, locate the silver shaft on the body of the valve labeled “Reset”. Gently turn the shaft clockwise with a small screwdriver or coin. You should hear the sound of a metal ball moving around and see a silver color in the circular “sight glass”. Hold the reset shaft until the metal ball has stopped moving. Your valve has been reset! Alternatively, if you would like to shut-off your valve, turn the red “Shut-Off” shaft counter-clockwise to shut off the flow of gas.

How do I know if my valve is working?2023-02-16T14:49:04-08:00

For AGV (Horizontal) series: First, check the small circular “sight glass” window located on the top of the valve. If you see green, your valve should be open. If red, this means your valve is closed and has shut off the gas. It will need to be reset to ensure gas continues to flow through.

For VAGV & NAGV (Vertical & 90 Degree) series: First, check the circular “sight glass window located on the front of the valve. If you see a silver ball, your valve should be open. If red, this means your valve is closed and has shut off the gas. It will need to be reset to ensure gas continues to flow through.

See our “How Does it Work” section for more details on how each valve works.
